Microstructural evolution of mullite during the sintering of kaolin powder compacts
نویسندگان
چکیده
Kaolin particles are usually ̄aky in shape. In the present study, kaolin powder compacts were prepared by applying the diepressing technique. The kaolin ̄akes tend to lie down on the plane which is perpendicular to the die-pressing direction. The powder compact thus shows anisotropic shrinkage after ®ring. A series of phase transformations take place as the kaolin is ®red at elevated temperature. Mullite is ®rst formed at a temperature as low as 1100 C. If the ®ring temperature is higher than 1400 C, needleshaped mullite grains are formed. The size and the aspect ratio of the mullite grains increase with the increase of ®ring temperature. Furthermore, the long axes of the mullite needles tend to be perpendicular to the die-pressing direction. # 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd and Techna S.r.l. All rights reserved.

Sintering behaviour of CeO2-Gd2O3 powders prepared by the oxalate coprecipitation method
The powder and compact characteristics as well as the sintering behaviour of two Ce02-G&03 compositions prepared by the oxalate coprecipitation method are studied as a function of the powder particle size and the pore-size distribution in the powder compacts. Shrinkage was measured at a constant heating rate and the results are compared with those obtained by isothermal sintering experiments. G...

The purpose of present research was production ofZr-based alloy as the nuclear fuel cladding by mechanical alloying (MA) and sintering process. Firstly, Zr and Cr powders were mechanically alloyed to produce the refractory and hard Zr-10 wt% Cr alloy, and then, the powder mixtures were consolidated by press and following sintering at temperature of 800˚C min. The phase evolution, microstructura...

Sintering is a key technology for processing ceramic and metallic powders into solid objects of complex geometry, particularly in the burgeoning field of energy storage materials. The modeling of sintering processes, however, has not kept pace with applications. Conventional models, which assume ideal arrangements of constituent powders while ignoring their underlying crystallinity, achieve at ...
متن کاملCeramic Properties of Pugu Kaolin Clays. Part 2: Effect of Phase Composition on Flexural Strength
Whiteware compositions prepared using Pugu kaolin and industrial grade quartz and feldspar were studied with respect to varying sintering temperatures. The strength developed was correlated to mullite (3Al2O3.2SiO2) content and the microstructure. It was observed that within the vitrification temperature range, the strength mainly depended on the mullite content and the bulk density. Above the ...

Microwave sintering possesses unique attributes and has the potential to be development as a new technique for controlling microstructure and to improve the properties of advanced ceramics. Because microwave radiation penetrates most ceramics, uniform volumetric heating is possible. Thermal gradients, which are produced during conventional sintering because of conductive and radioactive heat tr...
